Once classified as a part of Kent, and now included with London's 'urban sprawl', Orpington is on the South Eastern edge of England's largest City. Enjoying its own high street and supermarkets, it's also within easy commuting distance of Central London, including being on a night bus route from London's West End.
The 17th Century church and medieval Priory offer historic interest, while sports and leisure facilities are thoroughly modern. A central public garden also provides green space for public use. To the South of Orpington the M25 passes within a few miles, making for easy driving access to all sides of London.
In the more industrial areas it's possible to find very cheap homes with large gardens, but the surrounding areas are a little disappointing. In areas like Petts Wood and Locksbottom the homes are still affordable by London standards, and the area is generally nice.
Schools are good, and it's a very family orientated area. The distance from central London makes this a slightly older area in terms of population, and it lacks an exciting nightlife, but it's a safe and sensibly priced area with a lot to recommend it.
