Picture postcard Margate has sunken a little into faded glory, since losing a lot of its tourist trade to cheap overseas destinations. However it's easy to forgive a slightly rundown centre, and higher than average unemployment rate, when you experience the charm of this seaside town.
With a population of a little over 55,000, the town has all the facilities you'd want schools, colleges, shopping, cinema etc as well as a few added extras. The shell grotto is one of only a couple in the country, and the vintage amusement park is wonderfully kitsch.
Retail and tourism provide the majority of employment here, and there's a substantial retired population. It's not a particularly hip and happening town, but its got plenty of charm and some really lovely properties.
The areas of Cliftonville, Palm Bay and Botany Bay all offer some seaside views and attractive Victorian style homes. The suburb of Westgate-on-Sea can also offer some great value properties.
Prices in Margate are surprisingly low, with terraced properties starting from just £100,000 so it's a great place to look for a family home, or even a first time home.
