Despite Slough having a few hundred flats and a few hundred houses for sale of all denominations it must be understood as an area that has seen a population explosion. Only 10 other councils in the country have seen such a large increase and this has placed an understandable strain on the property market. So in areas like Burnham 2 bedroom apartments can cost £400,000 which is a large jump from other 2 bedroom flats in Slough costing as little as £170,000, this creates an uneven property market when the same type of property in the same area is twice the price. So while there may be properties available for sale on the market the number of people able to realistically afford the higher priced property is not as great, so affordable housing becomes an issue.
It is not just the property market that is affected by population growth, but local services and the prices of properties at the budget end of the market. This is reflected in the rental sector where there are a number of flats for rent but the best 2 bedroom apartments exceed £1,200 pcm, while budget 2 bed flats attract rents of just £700 pcm.
