East Lothian is a council area in south-east Scotland, situated just to the east of the capital city Edinburgh. It offers a cheaper alternative for individuals, couples and families who either don't want to or can't afford to live in the city.
The East Lothian area was designated in 1996 and its largest town is Musselburgh, which is right on the outskirts of Edinburgh.
East Lothian is served by the A1 that travels all the way down the east coast to Tyneside where it becomes the A1(M), so it is not particularly difficult to get around from the area and, of course, there are excellent rail links from Edinburgh.
In the towns, houses are generally terraced affairs with prices hovering a shade under the £100,000 mark but out in the country there is the opportunity to snap up a converted barn or country estate should that take your fancy and you have a spare couple of million floating around.
