The Yorkshire market town of Batley lies around 7 miles southeast of Leeds. It is served by the M62 motorway. The town has rail links to Leeds and Manchester. In recent times, Batley has developed a reputation as a shoppers' paradise, drawing in customers from across the West Riding and beyond.
There is plenty of traditional terraced housing in the centre of Batley, along with semis and larger detached houses, especially towards the edges of town. The Upper Batley neighbourhood, in particular, has many fine stone-built Victorian villas. Soothill, too, has some attractive family homes. (As the names of these neighbourhoods suggest, Batley has plenty of hills to climb!) Property in Birkenshaw is perhaps more modest in price and size, but still in a sought-after part of town.
You may find flats and apartments in comparatively short supply in the Batley area, though. House prices in Batley tend to be more competitive than in many other parts of the UK, reflecting the lower levels of local employment and economic activity.
The Birstall area offers plenty of commuter housing, with many residents working in nearby Leeds. If you're looking for more picturesque surroundings, try the areas around Ossett or Gomersal.
