Typically these blocks, with stables below and living quarters above, were built on the back of the grand terraces of Belgravia, Chelsea and Notting Hill in the 18th and 19th centuries. The advantages of the mews were much vaunted by the Victorian British, as this design kept the noise and smells of the stables away from the front of the residence, unlike in much of continental Europe where stables were off the main courtyard of grander properties. Once stables were replaced by cars, many were converted into garages, and because of their prime locations have since been converted again into highly fashionable and desirable residences.
