Stoke-on-Trent is a city in Staffordshire which consists of six towns making up 'the Potteries' (a clue to the area's industrial past and present, the city still produces some of the world's finest ceramics). Stoke-on-Trent is connected by the M6 which takes you close to Manchester and Liverpool. It has a main train line to Manchester which takes 45 minutes, reaching Birmingham in 55 minutes and London in an hour and 40. It also connects South to Oxford and Bournemouth. The main train station is in Hanley not Stoke however - the sprawling city setup may take a little getting used to!
The city has the Peak District on its doorstep and is home to the Trent and Mersey Canal and also features 77 miles of off-road bicycle paths through the city. It takes pride in a Cultural Quarter which has a range of theatres and gig venues which allude to Stoke's notorious reputation as the home of Northern Soul. Hanley is the place to party offering a cluster of bars and pubs.
