A Granny Flat is a self-contained section of a property that is smaller than the main part of the property and thus considered ancillary to it. It is not separately demised from the main property and thus sold together with it as one property. It can be detached from or connected to the main property. It can be above a garage, ground floor, several floors or basement. It will have its own kitchen, bathroom and bedroom.
They are suited to older relatives such as parents and grandparents but also used to give older children some independence before they fully move out. In addition they may be used for other relatives or even rented out to gain an additional stream of income.
