Also known as a Local Authority House, these were built and operated by local councils around the UK to provide housing for families on a lower than average income.


Around 20% of UK households now live in social housing with a waiting list of around a further 8%. Between 1980 and 1998 it is estimated that around 2million households bought their council flat in a right to buy scheme launched by the government. Right to buy still exists but rules around it have changed. Currently there are rules limiting who is eligible and also limiting open market sales after purchase.
40% of council houses are owned by a local authority, 45% by housing associations and the remaining 15% by arms length organisations.
